Anxiety of the Mothers with Hospitalized Children

Abstract
To provide individualized and effective nursing care for the pediatric inpatients, their mothers¢¥ anxiety level and the factors affecting it were examined.
The study was performed from August, 1991 to January, 1992. Among the 143 subjects studied, 71 were the mothers of pediatric inpatients at Chonnam University Hospital and 72 were those of normal children living in Kwangju or its close county Whasun.
The State-Trait Anxiety Instrument of Spielberger¢¥s Self Report Form which was translated into Korean was used to assess the level of the anxiety. The results obtained were as follows:
1. The mothers of the hospitalized children showed higher anxiety scores than did the mothers of the normal children.
2. As the state anxiety increased, trait anxiety also increased both in the mothers of the normal and the hospitalized children.
3. The mothers with the educational level under senior high school showed higher anxiety scores than those with that above the college. The mothers with previous hospitalization experience showed a higher anxiety score than those without.
4. The increased hospitalization frequency, as-yet-undetermined diagnosis, or the increased blood sampling frequency increased anxiety scores.
5. The mothers who were uncertain of their children¢¥s prognosis showed a higher anxiety than those who were confident of the prognosis.
